Well we had a great time with Jer's parents these past two weeks. It sure was a different Christmas this year -- here are some more pictures of some of the sights we took in this holiday season...

An ancient (3rd of 4th century) synogogue in Capernaum

The water wasn't too cold but we didn't swim in the Galilee this time.

Below is a view from Tel Rehov (where Jer did his dig eight years ago) -- we were all surprised by how green it could get in the winter -- usually it's just sand and rock.

I stole this picture from Jer's parents -- this is the ramp the Romans built to get up to Masada. It took them three years to get to the top. Below are some pictures from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. There were many beautiful services happening because it was Greek Orthodox Christmas (Jan. 6).

Hey Guys --

Our friend Reuben was happy to see your blog because his introduction to the Orthodox Church was in Jerusalem, and he immediately recognized the church from your photos. He converted to the eastern church last year (he's a half menno -- actually a Penner too!). A friend and I went with him to the feast of the holy nativity service on Jan. 6 too, and it was completely beautiful -- despite being extremely long. I love the devotional atmosphere of these churches which are filled with candles and icons -- the incense was indeed sweet and the canting and harmonies enchanting. Anyway, I love your pictures with all the hanging candle thingys (I just learned their real name, but I forget it now).
It is lovely and great to see what you are all doing ~

Peace to you,
a. lee

I should correct myself by saying that I'm actually not sure which orthodox church he went to in his travels -- perhaps it was the one in the Armenian compond? . . . anyway, I think he left a comment too, with those previous posts.
